Growing up on the Upper West Side, I found inspiration in urban architecture, scenic moments in nature, and the hustle and bustle of the city. Today my main subjects are cityscapes, many reflecting this neighborhood. My art is quirky and gritty, with sociopolitical overtones. I appreciate the versatility of oil paint, which can be thinned to create gentle wash paintings or layered to make textured impasto pieces. My goal is to enhance people’s lives through creativity, to make art that is accessible and makes a positive difference in people's lives.

I arrived in the United States from Japan in 1979. New York City, my home for the last 25 years, is where I would like to live the rest of my life. There is no place that matches its dynamism, drama, hope, and energy. Buildings, bridges, tunnels, and the subway inspire my watercolors. My goal as an artist is to share the things I experience and enjoy.

My work is influenced by urban nature and the dynamics of change, and this painting is inspired by the summer season. A graduate of the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art, I continued photography studies at the School of Visual Arts and studied painting at the Art Students League of New York and the National Academy of Design. I have lived on the Upper West Side since 1977.

All I ever wanted to do was color, first with crayons and then with paints. I went to the High School of Art and Design here in New York, where it was mandatory to paint “en plein air,” on the subway ride home, or on weekends in the neighborhood. I am still at my happiest when outside painting. I often paint with NYC Urban Sketchers or with a group of artists who have been painting together since high school. Finding a location, preparing the perfect palette, discussing composition, completing the project in the chosen spot with others, and interacting with people who stop by have provided me with a unique artistic dialogue.

I’ve been a die-hard Upper West Sider since the mid-1970s. A lot has changed in that time: the buildings are higher; the subways are more crowded. But the laid-back personality that distinguishes the neighborhood is still on display. I always keep an eye out for people who, going about their daily lives, stand out in the crowd. The fluidity of the watercolor medium, combined with my loose painting style, allows me to capture both a moment in time and a feeling for our community as a whole. My hope is that viewers will recognize a bit of themselves in my images of the wonderful neighbors who make the Upper West Side so endlessly interesting.

I am a native New Yorker and educator who is constantly inspired by New York, its history, and its people. I can often be seen taking photographs on the streets of the city. My camera makes me blend in, an invisible man, and makes me see. Photography has always been spiritually uplifting for me, and what I photograph is ultimately a reflection of myself. For 11 years I’ve photographed the Harlem neighborhood where I grew up, around 116th Street and 8th Avenue. It's now a different world. This image captures a sense of when life seemed full of hope.

An artist living on the Upper West Side for more than 45 years, I also work as a scenic designer. My paintings attempt to capture the beauty of the everyday moments that express our basic need for human connection and love for one another. The power of each painting comes from the ordinariness of the depicted moment.

There are those who love trains. I am not one of them; my Underground series began when, after 14 years of painting, I became interested in taking watercolor "beyond pretty." I tried alternative, impressionist techniques: thick paint, sprayed water, layers of spatter and scumble. Most of the nontraditional paintings I admired depicted bridges and cityscapes. What other subject, I wondered, could be equally urban, gritty, and massive? The answer lay beneath my feet. The more I observed the subway, the more I saw its juxtapositions and ironies. Each station was predictably uniform yet unique; its size and scale were sprawling yet claustrophobic. The subway's miles of grimy pipes and rail, its sheer geometric functionality, began to reveal a kind of sullen beauty. It is a place urban dwellers hurry to leave yet can't do without. Tens of thousands of riders swarm its tunnels, cars, platforms, and stairwells every rush hour, a tide of evocative images. In the Underground series I simplify complex human and station architecture into ragged shapes of light and dark, illuminated by the fractured light of speeding trains. The series explores the rushed, off-balance feeling evoked by traveling in a confined subterranean space, one that is at once mundane and vaguely menacing, overbright yet shadowy.

My enjoyment of my native New York is reflected in the work I have created for Art on the Corner. Here I've depicted a common sight on the city's sidewalks: a dog walker contending with a dozen dogs. I chose the subject because I have always been amazed by the job the city's dog walkers perform. We've all seen them traipsing in and out of buildings with a pack, keeping the dogs under control, cleaning up after them. Where would dog owners be without them? I am filled with admiration for those who meet this need--and am so glad I am not one of them. This painting celebrates the dog walker!

Originally a piece for a tenth-grade art class at the Dwight-Englewood School, this drawing is a study of perspective. I am a 17-year old high school student living on the Upper West Side, and the George Washington Bridge has been a major part of my life, especially since I started commuting by bus to school in New Jersey. Inspired by the ride, I wanted to capture the beauty and grandeur of the bridge. The perspective in this drawing was intended to convey the excitement of passing beneath its towers, which still enthrall me today. I have been painting and drawing ever since I can remember. I reflect my memories of New York in pencil and also paint portraits in oil. I plan to pursue art in college, and to continue drawing and painting for the rest of my life.

Born and raised in Chongqing, China, I majored in philosophy at Xiamen University, then moved to New York in 2013 to study filmmaking. The city and its citizens have opened my world to the artistic universe, which I now explore through painting and photography as well as filmmaking.

An artist and illustrator, I have lived in the city for close to 40 years and regularly run in Central Park, observing its seasonal colors and changes. I paint both en plein air and, back at the studio, from photographs I take. I am inspired by the park's quiet moments as well as by its various lively activities.

Born in Brooklyn, now a resident of Queens, I have found my love of drawing has strengthened since my retirement and that painting has become a necessary part of my life. I am continuously intrigued by the creative process and the learning experience painting provides. These works, painted from my own photographs, study how light creates shades, shadows, and highlights. It affects the color values of the object it falls on or washes across.

I moved from Canada to New York in the 1970s and tend to photograph what I have seen daily throughout my 40-odd years on the Upper West Side. Walks in Central Park evolve into an appreciation of trees and the cycle of seasonal changes. And then there are the serendipitous “moments” of the unpredictable, infinite show unfolding every day on the streets of New York. It’s all there staring me in the face. And it’s beautiful. And so the camera goes “click.”
